An exploration into Leadership in Sales

It gives us great pleasure to announce the APS European Sales & Leadership event for 2018 for APS Fellows and Senior Sales Leaders.

This half-day conference is for those in sales leadership roles or looking at the transition to board member, and what may be creating the barrier, in particular female sales leaders.  The APS Fellowship benefits from some people who have already achieved the transition.

This interactive event will also enable the vast knowledge that exist within our membership to share insight and ideas that will contribute to larger research projects that we will share post the event.

Consequently we are delighted to present some of these people who will talk through their journey, their learning, barriers, resilience and support mechanisms developed.

Session 1 – Phil Jones MBE, Managing Director, Brother UK
An exploration into Leadership in Sales

Not every sales exec can successfully bridge to the board, yet many have it as a stated ambition or direction of travel for their career.

Smashing your numbers puts you in the spotlight, it sets the scene but doesn’t guarantee success.  You also need to think, act and lead differently.  It requires a mindshift, a change in style, a bigger picture, longer term mindset.

In his session Phil Jones will share his advice to any sales leader looking to make it to the board or ultimately to lead a business as Managing Director.  After ten years as a Sales & Marketing Director and five years as Managing Director, he can share many of the lessons learned and major pieces of advice to accelerate your climb up the ladder and transition to the boardroom.

About the speaker: Phil Jones is Managing Director of Brother UK, the UK arm of global technology manufacturer – Brother.  Joining the business in 1994 as a fax salesperson, he worked his way up the organisation to the then be appointed as its head in 2013.

Awarded an MBE in the June 2016 Birthday Honours List for Services to Business, he is a fellow of the IoD, the Association of Professional Sales and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

Session 2 – Chris Paton, Managing Director, Quirk Solutions
From bombs and bullets to the Boardroom

In his talk, Chris Paton will describe the leadership journey he has been on for the last 24 years, from being a junior officer in the Royal Marines, to a senior military advisor on Afghan Strategy in Whitehall, to supporting global corporates.  Chris will use these experiences to explore concepts like having a growth mindset, how to be a vulnerable leader, how leadership styles change with context and how to allow the people you lead to feel like they have a say in what happens.

  • How to lead in different situations

About the speaker: A published HBR author, Chris is a former Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Marines and was advisor to the Cabinet Office on the Afghan strategy. He is now the Managing Director of Quirk Solutions, working with large brands such as Qinetic and Waitrose as well as SMEs, to pressure test their plans, improving foresight and identifying risks.

Session 3 – Valerie Risk, Client Executive, Fujitsu
Selling the Future!

As we move from the Age of Digital to the Age of Disruption how do we need to change our approach to working with customers? New perspectives are needed and leveraging the power of an alternative lens will create differentiation. How do you transform to an agile solution approach and take your customer and your people on that journey?
